Fitted Wardrobes in Bristol

Built to measure for the room you actually have — alcoves that aren't square, ceilings that slope, and walls that were plastered a hundred years ago.

Built for Bristol Homes

Made for Houses That Aren't Square

Much of Bristol's housing is Victorian and Edwardian — the terraces of Bishopston, Southville, Totterdown, Easton and Redland, and the taller period houses around Clifton and Cotham. They are lovely to live in and genuinely awkward to furnish.

Chimney breasts leave alcoves that are never quite a standard width. Floors slope. Walls bow. Picture rails and deep skirtings get in the way. A wardrobe bought off the shelf is built to a round number, so it leaves a gap at one side, a dust shelf on top, and a strip of dead floor behind.

Everything we build is measured on site and scribed to the walls as they actually are. The result fits wall to wall and floor to ceiling, and looks like it was fitted when the house was built.

Alcove wardrobes

Each side of the chimney breast measured separately — because they are rarely the same.

Loft conversions

Carcasses built to follow the roof pitch, using the eaves instead of boxing them off.

Full-wall runs

Floor-to-ceiling storage across an entire wall, with the bed recess built in if needed.

Period detailing

Shaker and panelled doors, hand-painted to match existing skirting and architrave.

Inside the Wardrobe

Fitted Out for How You Actually Use It

The outside is only half the job. We plan the interior around what is going in it — how much hanging space you need versus shelving, whether you want drawers inside the wardrobe rather than a separate chest taking up floor space, and where shoes and bulky items go.

  • Full-height and double hanging rails
  • Soft-close drawers built into the carcass
  • Adjustable shelving and shoe racks
  • Quality hinges, runners and handles
  • Hand-painted finishes in any colour

Questions

Fitted Wardrobes — FAQs

How much do fitted wardrobes cost in Bristol?

Cost depends on the width of the run, how complex the interior is, and the finish. A single alcove wardrobe is a very different job from a full wall with drawers, internal lighting and a hand-painted finish.

Because every wardrobe is built to measure, we quote after seeing the room rather than working from a price list. Quotes are free, itemised, and carry no obligation.

Can you build wardrobes for sloping ceilings and loft conversions?

Yes — sloping ceilings are one of the main reasons people give up on off-the-shelf wardrobes. We build the carcass to follow the pitch of the roof, so storage runs right into the eaves instead of leaving a dead triangle of wasted space behind a standard rectangular unit.

Do fitted wardrobes work in Victorian terraces with chimney breasts?

They are arguably where fitted wardrobes make the biggest difference. The alcoves either side of a chimney breast are rarely a standard width, rarely perfectly square, and rarely the same as each other.

A built-to-measure wardrobe is scribed to the existing walls and skirting, so it sits flush against them and reads as part of the house rather than a box pushed into a gap.

Can you match existing paintwork and woodwork?

Yes. Wardrobes can be hand-painted in any colour, including matching an existing wall colour or the skirting and architrave already in the room. Door styles can be matched to the period of the property too — shaker, panelled, or flat contemporary fronts.

Which parts of Bristol do you cover?

All of it. That includes Clifton, Redland, Bishopston, Cotham, Southville, Bedminster, Totterdown, Knowle, Easton, Horfield, Henleaze, Westbury-on-Trym and Fishponds, plus surrounding areas such as Long Ashton, Portishead, Clevedon, Keynsham, Thornbury and Yate.

If you're not sure whether you're in range, just ask — we're happy to travel for the right project.

Are fitted wardrobes better than freestanding ones?

For older houses, usually yes. Freestanding wardrobes are built to standard sizes, so in a period room they tend to leave gaps at the sides, a dust trap on top and dead space behind.

A fitted wardrobe uses the full height and width available. In a small Bristol bedroom that can be the difference between a room that works and one that feels cramped.

"Jake was awesome. From the start of the planning stages he was super clear, quick communication, open to ideas and great at interpreting what we wanted. When he came to install our wardrobes he was respectful of our home… We will be using him for all our carpentry needs from now on!"
